Special Education

UNO's Special Education and Communication Disorders department has online graduate programs designed to prepare educators to work with and advocate for students with a wide range of disabilities and challenges. Specifically, our programs focus on high-incidence disabilities such as learning disabilities (dyslexia) and behavioral and emotional disorders.

School Counseling

The 48-credit MS degree with a concentration in School Counseling includes the coursework and field experiences (practicum/internships) required for certification as a School Counselor in Nebraska.

Don’t have a teaching certificate?

Nebraska also provides a path to an endorsement as a school counselor without a teaching certificate through the Teaching Program Alternative Permit. An advisor will work with alternative permit applicants to ensure you complete the appropriate courses to meet this requirement.

Secondary Education Master's

Designed for those teaching young people in secondary schools across a variety of curricular areas, our Secondary Education program offers an integrated approach to developing the skills and dispositions needed for today’s educational environments. Choose a program of study that will allow you to explore both content and pedagogy.

The master's program is designed for graduates of education programs who have received initial teacher certification and wish to enhance their teaching skills through advanced studies in instructional practices that are informed by research.

Early Childhood Special Education

Program Overview

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Program prepares students to support excellent outcomes for young children birth to age 5 with special needs and their families. Our program is open to full- or part-time students and is offered entirely online.

Master's degree: Our program offers a master's degree in ECSE that can be completed with or without pursuit of the ECSE teaching endorsement.

Visual Impairments/Orientation & Mobility

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln prepares students to support excellent outcomes for individuals with visual impairments and their families. Our program is open to full- or part-time students.
Overview of Program Options

TSVI: We offer a training program for future teachers of students with visual impairments (TSVIs). Prospective scholars can apply for a master's degree program and/or an added endorsement program.

Deaf Education

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Deaf Education Program prepares graduate students to meet the linguistic, cultural, educational, and social needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing ages birth to 21. Our program is based on current research that is focused on improving academic outcomes for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is open to full- or part-time students, is entirely online, and is flexible to meet the individual needs of students.
